ARTIST'S STATEMENT

A dear friend and colleague, Nan Miller, who invited me to paint with a group of friends in her home from the fall of 1998 through the spring of 1999. She shared the basic techniques of watercolor and I found myself intrigued by the process of painting. When we had a backyard show for family and close friends, I was elated by the results as well.

Uluru's Majesty

Encouraged, by another very dear friend, Jan Wright, I sought out instructors who would add to my knowledge and skills. It took me awhile before I was willing to show my work to anyone other than family, friends and classmates thus my first exhibitions were with classes I was taking. It took another major effort for me to enter into a juried show. Imagine my surprise when the painting I entered was not only juried in but also won an award.

Under the tutelage of Barbara McLaughlin, I have widened my repertoire of skills to include pastels, pen and ink, and crayon. I have also experimented with wrapping paper, both as a collage material and as a surface for crayons. In September 2004, I had a show in partnership with Jan Wright, entitled, African Reflections – Two Views. This show is very personal expression of a trip that literally “took my breath away”. It turned out to be the beginning of a spiritual and artistic journey that I hope is reflected in my work. In September 2006, I had a second show at the La Habra Art Association Gallery. In this show, Images from Down Under, Jan and I drew from our experiences in New Zealand and Australia using a variety of media and techniques.
